I have bought a lot of gold coins from APMEX.com – they are trust worthy and cheap.
however, my favorite gold coins are the Napoleon era coins & swiss helvetias and british soveriegns. They’re harder to find so I often resort to ebay – if you do buy off ebay, make sure you buy from a reputed seller. I use frenchgoldcoins.info to search for my favs.

There is also a gold exchange traded fund you can purchase if you have a stock brokerage account. It is offered by Ishares, and the ticker is GLD. The silver exchange traded fund ticker is SLV. So, there are a lot of ways to invest in the metals, without trading futures contracts!
